The MINI Countryman has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The XC40 doesn’t offer a front passenger side knee airbag.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Countryman. But it costs extra on the XC40.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Countryman’s reliability 27 points higher than the XC40.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that MINI vehicles are better in initial quality than Volvo vehicles. With 40 fewer problems per 100 vehicles, JD Power ranks MINI higher than Volvo.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that MINI vehicles are more reliable than Volvo vehicles. J.D. Power ranks MINI above average in long-term dependability. With 12 more problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, Volvo is rated below average.

The Countryman S’ standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 47 more horsepower (241 vs. 194) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 221) than the XC40 B4’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The Countryman S’ 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the XC40 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid. The JCW Countryman’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 65 more horsepower (312 vs. 247) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the XC40 B5’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid.

On the EPA test cycle the Countryman S gets better fuel mileage than the XC40 T5 (24 city/32 hwy vs. 23 city/30 hwy).

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the MINI Countryman higher (5 to 7 out of 10) than the Volvo XC40 (4). This means the Countryman produces up to 13.2 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the XC40 every 15,000 miles.

The Countryman offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The XC40 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The Countryman stops much shorter than the XC40:

The Countryman offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The XC40’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Countryman’s rear seats recline. The XC40’s rear seats don’t recline.

The Countryman has a much larger cargo volume than the XC40 with its rear seat up (25 vs. 20.4 cubic feet).

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that MINI service is better than Volvo. J.D. Power ranks MINI fourth in service department satisfaction. With a 28% lower rating, Volvo is ranked 23rd.

The Countryman’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The XC40 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Countryman has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, warning, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XC40 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Countryman to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The XC40 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The Countryman has a standard heated steering wheel to take the chill out of steering on extremely cold winter days before the vehicle heater warms up. A heated steering wheel costs extra on the XC40.

The Countryman offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the XC40.

The Countryman’s optional Parking Assistant Plus can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Control Parking will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The XC40’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 MINI Countryman retains 54.12% of its original value after 5 years, more than the 51.74% resale value of the 2026 Volvo XC40 after five years, which can save the MINI’s owner up to $1770 in depreciation.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Countryman first among small suvs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The XC40 isn’t in the top three in its category.
